MUSIC I forgot to include my favorite bands and songs and albums in my big Top 10s post yesterday, so here's a post devoted to music. I was trying to include download links to every single song or album that I mentioned in the whole post, but it was taking too long, so all you get are the favorite songs (for now). TOP 10 FAVORITE BANDS/MUSICIANS (not in order) Roy Orbison The Carpenters Pulp Petula Clark Spice Girls Britney Spears POLYSICS Shangri-Las The Kids of Widney High Abba TOP 20 F Continue reading Hummer: Of Montreal remix only gets groovier, gayer Photo: Getty Images Love is complicated. Kevin Barnes, Of Montreal's glam-obsessed, androgynous front man, definitely knows a thing or two about the clashing, fucked-up emotions that loves entails, and it all shines through on the shimmying, disco-flavored "Gallery Piece," from the band's recently released album Skeletal Lamping. While many listeners find Skeletal Lamping a bit too challenging to endure in its entirety -- Barnes' ego can get the best of him, and he crams a lot of vision in Continue reading
Its not news, its the soapbox!Stumbled across something the other day that, frankly, appalled me. Katy Perry said that Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse “introduced America to great music.” To which I reply, “Just because you haven’t been paying attention doesn’t mean it hasn’t been happening.” See Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann, Tori Amos, Jewel, etc. And they’re all home-grown too! Of course, my reply assumes that Katy is referring only to female singer-songwriters as “great music” and cites only what I could prattle off the top of my Continue reading
iPhone - The Submarines - You, Me, and the Bourgeoisie So back in July Apple came out with an iPhone commercial with The Submarines and Keri and I freaked out as we were in love with them. We had just seen them in nyc a month before and I had been listening to the new album almost non stop since Amazon let me download it. Not long after that we saw them in concert again (opening for Aimee Mann) and got to talk to Blake (John was hiding in the back) about the iPhone commercial. Blake was super excited and we mentioned it was sad it was just the ins Continue reading
From the stepFORUM of the Day Along with a line of children books, I am working on a line of Greeting Cards. You know, become the next Hallmark, maybe even get my own TV channel that I can produce heartwarming badly produced movies about love, the holidays and other fuzzy things. So far I have a couple written….they are a work in progress but thought I’d share the rough drafts with you: For Her Birthday: A bunch of years ago, I was walking by a high school prom and saw what looked like a white cord sticking out of th Continue reading

in which I attempt to show you my room Sam suggested I take some pictures of my room to share. I tried taking them with my good camera, but I need a wider lens- it's too damned small to get a good shot of with my current lens. Instead, here are some webcam shots of my 8x10 temporary Hut Sweet Hut. Door, the hook that serves as my closet, tea and coffee area on top of a tupperware dresser in the corner, and above on the shelf there are some spinning wheel bobbins and whatall. Also, yes, that's 9 volt batteries and albacore tuna hun Continue reading
The Submarines (image from johngushue) The Submarines are an indie pop band from Los Angeles, California. Working as solo artists in Boston, the two members of the band, John Dragonetti and Blake Hazard, were introduced through a mutual friend. Dragonetti and Hazard soon become romantically involved, and toured Europe together as members of each other’s band. The relationship lasted for four years, but ended in the fall of 2004 when the pair moved to L.A. After the break-up, both Hazard and Dragonetti co Continue reading
Cherishing the momentThis weekend I sold some Aimee Mann tickets we had for her Christmas show, since neither Kazumi or I feel like leaving Karina with a babysitter yet. I sold the tickets to someone on Craigslist, who casually asked why I wasn’t going to the concert. When I told her I wanted to stay home with my baby she sent a long e-mail back telling me she had a couple kids, and that they grow up so fast, and I have to cherish these moments I have with Karina. I get this advice a lot; rather, we get this advice Continue reading

John Doe @ Aladdin Theater on Wednesday night! On June 12 Yep Roc Records released John Doe's much anticipated A Year in the Wilderness, the follow-up to 2005's acclaimed Forever Hasn't Happened Yet, of which Rolling Stone said, "John Doe proves again that this punk legend/journeyman actor can still make great music." In typical John Doe fashion A Year in the Wilderness 12 tracks feature an array of guest appearances including players he has worked with in the past-guitarist Dave Alvin, bassist Dave Carpenter and Jamie Muhoberac on piano an Continue reading

Shaken and Stirred Samples As mentioned on Friday, I have a few worthwhile covers from the 1997 Bond theme tribute album Shaken and Stirred to share with you all. This album was produced and masterminded by film composer David Arnold, who has since gone on to score for every Bond film from Tomorrow Never Dies onward. (According to Wikipedia, John Barry, upon hearing this album, recommended Arnold for the job.) First up, as promised, is a swell version of "Thunderball" sung by ABC's Martin Fry, who proves here that fop Continue reading
Media Consumption Report: Comics & MusicSince finishing up with grad school, I’ve had lots of long-anticipated time to read and do whatever the hell I want. So here’s the first installment of what I’ve been reading, watching, listening to in the past couple of months. Transmetropolitan, a science fiction comics series by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson. Spider Jerusalem is the protagonist, a kind of twisted future Hunter S Thompson gonzo investigative reporter. I’ve been reading a story arc centering on a US Presidential Election, w Continue reading
Evil Deeds Indeed I did something evil yesterday! I committed a sin unforgiveable whilst shopping amidst the darkening glaswegian streets. I saw it, sitting there on the shelf, staring back at me with a faked air of nonchalance i could see right through and a mona lisa smile smirking seductively. I perspired and moved forward to pick up the objet inanimate, hoping no one would be too near to bear witness as my morals lovingly destroyed themselves. I could not be sure which of the seven i was dancing arm in arm Continue reading

Austin City Limits - 8:00 PM ET, PBS Click Here to download full episode Since the 1980s, Aimee Mann has been known as one of the top songwriters in contemporary music. She frequently pairs the bleakest of poetry with soaring, infectious melodies for emotionally explosive songs that have won her numerous awards and fans. In the ’80s she had a hit with her band ‘Til Tuesday’s debut single “Voices Carry,” but it’s her solo work that has gained her the most attention. Songs from her latest album are featured in her “ACL” debut. Continue reading

Obligatory Fall Music Mix My friends always joke about how much i link certain music to certain days/seasons/times-of-the-day, but i think it’s pretty valid. Not to say i can’t listen to that music if it isn’t in that specific environment but some music just seems better when it’s in the morning, or the spring, 3AM, etc. Now that the leaves are falling off the trees and there has been a cosntant fog/mist the past 48 hours here in baltimore, i think we can officially say the dreary days of fall are upon us. Not the ea Continue reading
